Free Music Weekly

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 25, 2007, 9:23 AM
What Follows is The List. The List is a list (Duh) of various music download locations and websites, all free, all badass.

Mp3 Audio download sites

Spinner
Think- Free daily downloads from a lot of indie bands you've never heard that supply a great amount of suitable Ipod padding. Spinner also has numerous music review and articles. The coolest part is in the lower right corner, a friendly little critter called The Blog Roll. The Blog Roll has a list of small music download hosts sure to fill countless hours of MP3 dumpster diving.
[link]

WXPN
A college radio station straight outta Philly, fully equipped with a download every single work day. Normally posting local Philadelphia artists WXPN has surprised me quite often by whipping out some big names such as Ani Difranco, Bruce Springsteen's newest pre-release Mp3, Peter, Bjorn and John, and Explosions in the Sky.
[link]

FBi
Great stuff from the Down Under. Australians that sound as good as Californian's but with less drugs.
Try - Nil By Ear
[link]

Kevchino
Updated about once or twice a month with lots of eclectic sounds, a back catalogue that includes Mp3's by Iron and Wine, The Dirty Projectors, Spoon, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and The National
[link]

KRVX
A Radio Station out of Austin that hosts performances live on the radio, then records and distributes them in their archive. Includes an entire live concert by Modest Mouse, tracks by The Black Angels, My Brightest Diamond, The Ugly Beats, and a recording of the very first show ever played by Explosions In The Sky! Updated every three months, with all the quarterly activity
[link]

Free Indie
Stacked with mountains of free 3-5 track Eps by artists such as The Faint, Bright Eyes, +/-, The Shins, Of Montreal, and The Go! Team.
[link]

The Devil Has The Best Tuna
[link]

The Internet Archive: Live music section
This is one monster of a site, hosting literally thousands of full concert downloads. Caution: If you find a band you like you still have to sift through dozens of recordings most of which were made by fans at an extraordinarily low quality, make sure to look for recordings straight from the mixing boards or recordings done as radio interviews. There is also a lot more media however the site is confusing and you can easily become disenchanted, so please venture only if you've got some time and patience to spare.

Some Highlights of the IA Include:

Spoon

Great Internet Radio

Pandora
[link]
Choose any artist or song and pandora will create a radio station playing similar music. Make multiple stations and mix them together

[link].
[link]
Hundreds of privately hosted and chosen playlists to steam from, find almost any song no matter how obscure and listen in.

Pure Volume
[link]
Mainstream and underground music with an abnormal amount of free downloads.

Exceptional Myspace/Pure Volume Bands

Local (In San Antonio Texas)

Make Your Own Maps-
Think- Hardcore and Punk (Not Hardcore Punk) with a singer you can understand, who is also happens to be a published poet and political activist. Heap on top of that the most energetic live show I've ever seen. MYOM is definitely worth checking out.
Try- Touch Your Own Torture and What it Means to be a Waitress
Total Downloads- 4
[link]

Pinata Protest-
Think- Punk rock with accordions and a spanish speaking singer.
Try- Rocket and La Cantina, all four tracks are great!
Total Downloads - 4
[link]

Big Soy-
Think- Indie but harder... and cooler... made by a group with only two band members.
Try- Sound of War, Northern Squall, and Where the Problem Is
Total Downloads- 3
[link]
[link]

Dism-
Think- Perhaps the best Tool rip off I've ever heard. Bitchin' singer, great drummer.
Try- Placebo and Vicodin
Total downloads- 4
 [link]

The Black Angels (Local in Texas)
Think- If Jim Morrison did Mescaline instead of LSD he would sound like this.
Try- The Soviet Union and The First Vietnamese War
Total Downloads- 2
[link]
[link]
[link]

Not Local

RX Bandits -
Think- The Police but young and more bad-ass in a rocking way.
Try- Decresendo, Apparition, and Taking Chase...
Total downloads- 7 (Good songs too!)
[link]
[link]

The Refused-
Seeing as how they broke up in the 90's The Refused aren't really a Myspace band however myspace is how they entered my world so thats what I'll call them. Think Punk but cooler and Swedish.
Try- New Noise and Summer Holidays
Total Downloads - Zero, but it's the albums are rampant on Ebay and Amazon, I got mine for $3.00.
[link]

Australian Pink Floyd-
Think- A really good Pink Floyd cover band, don't expect anything new but there are some spot on stadium versions of all our favorite songs for free under the download link.
Try- Comfortably Numb and Time
Total Downloads- 7
[link]

----

Spoken Word Poetry-
A Spoken word poetry Mp3 site with track and comentary by the the biggest names in the business.
feed://feeds.feedburner.com/IndiefeedPerformancePoetry

Spoken Word Poets-

Anis Mojani-
Think- Sounds like a pre-pubescent 8th grader, speaks like someone who knows more the Yoda minus the backwards talking.
Try- Shake The Dust
Total downloads- 4
[link]

Buddy Wakefield -
Think - The Jesus Christ of spoken word
Try- Convenience Stores
[link]

Andrea Gibson-
Think- A short spiky haired elementary teacher more brass then most then men I know
Try- Walmart
[link]

Taylor Mali-
Try- How To Write A Political Poem
[link]

Hello,

Without deviantART I wouldn't be taking pictures. Without deviantART I wouldn't have my current appreciation for the artwork of others. This community has meant much for my personal / artistic development and I owe it to people like you. To me, a watch-list addition stands out above other types of support on the website - it lets me know that people are interested in viewing new photography and the simple act of pushing the list button keeps me both motivated and inspired to further my photographic goals.

I've disabled comments on my work so that I have more time to view and support the work of others on the site. However, that doesn't mean that I don't like critiques. Never hesitate to send me a note if you have comments, suggestions, or criticism on my work - I will always listen with open ears and would be more than happy to reply to your thoughts. One of the reasons why I joined deviantART was to learn more about artwork - it is this website that has taught me most of what I know about photography and I still have a lot to learn from people like you.

I also like to give feedback in return - if you are ever looking for constructive critique I'd like to help out when I have the time. Just send me a note as a reminder and I'll be sure to stop by as soon as possible.

I wish you all the best.

Cheers,
Evan
